Our Forest and Waters

Forest and Waters
You are visiting the Blue River Watershed here in Summit County. Nearly 80% of the area is U.S. Forest Service land, belonging to the White River National Forest. The natural resources, trails, and historic sites found on Forest Service land are under the jurisdiction of the Dillon Ranger District, while the towns and county manage open spaces, trails and other recreational amenities that contribute to the high caliber outdoor experience that is Summit County.
Water in Summit County stems from the high alpine peaks in the form of snowmelt, flowing into the upper and lower reaches of the Blue River. The Upper Blue River contributes to Dillon Reservoir, the City of Denver’s largest water source. The flow from the Lower Blue River empties into Green Mountain Reservoir, which is located at the northern end of Summit County.
Our Wildlife
The wildlife in our region ranges from migrating elk herds to small creatures such as the pika, which can be found in the alpine tundra. Protected species, such as the Canada lynx, can be found throughout the National Forest and are subject to specific habitat protections. The rivers, streams, and alpine lakes hold fish such as the protected Colorado Cutthroat Trout, while species such as the Boreal toad can be found in wetland areas.

Climate Resiliency
Issues such as drought and significant wildfire risk are rampant throughout the Colorado region. Our partners and community work together to understand these issues and to develop solutions that seek to protect our vibrant landscape for generations.
